Books, Manuscripts
This astonishing scholarly book is a first-hand record of how the people in the Colony of New South Wales lived from day to day during the first year of settlement. It has been compiled entirely from contemporary sources - ships' logs, diaries and journals - which have only recently become available for publication. The hardships and privations endured by all members of the community were very severe. The settlement was originally made of approximately 750 convicts, together with the crews of ships, soldiers, and Govenor Phillip's administrative staff. John Cobley originally researched into the early settlement of Australia without any thought of making the result public, but he became so fascinated by his investigations that he decided to complete this book.
