When Mark Ablett, writer and patron of the arts, invites people to the ''red house,''his picturesque country residence, they don't take long to ask. This time, the English summer retreat is interrupted by a surprise guest: Mark's good-for-nothing brother Robert, who has spent the last fifteen years in Australia. None of those present knew of his existence, and the siblings can't possibly be very close. And the idyll is finally over when Robert, the black sheep of the family, is murdered and Mark subsequently disappears without a trace. With the police in the dark, two of his friends, Antony Gillingham and Bill Beverley, decide to solve the case-in their own way.
