A pictorial history of Alaska, from its purchase by the United States in 1867 through 1912, chronicling the exploration of the wilderness, the discovery of gold, and the development of the whaling, fishing, and fur industries. This book looks at what the early frontier people encountered on their first arrivals in Alaska. Wheeler goes on to describe what they had to endure. The brutal weather, and the challenging environment. Once the Americans purchased Alaska from the Russians, there was little sense of what had been acquired. Even with a century of westward expansion under their belts, found it hard at first to comprehend the large chunk of wilderness they bought from Russia in 1867.
