Victorian Lady on the Texas Frontier is a the journal of a girl who left England with her mother and sister to come to Texas in 1832. C.Richard King talks of how Mrs. Coleman had a knack for being in the center of action. For example, being perfectly placed for the early preparations for the Texas "struggle for independence", the Runaway Scrape, and the Federal attack on the Texas Gulf Coast in the Civil War. He goes on to examine how while boarding with Jane Long, the so called "the Mother of Texas", she began to write down her experiences, and this was done, as Coleman points out, in a clear, energetic style, painting her characters sharply and with decided opinions about them all.
