After transferring from the Scots Guards to the Army Physical Training Corps, Howard was posted in 1965 to the Headquarters, 48 Gurkha Infantry Brigade, Hong Kong accompanied by his wife Carmine and their young son Andrew. When 1st 6th Queen Elizabeth's Own Gurkha Rifles went to Borneo on active service during the Indonesian Confrontation, Howard as a young sergeant went with them.
